José is Full Professor and Dean of the School of Economics and Business at the Universidad de Chile, and a nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He earned a Civil Engineering degree and an MSc in Engineering from Universidad de Chile, then a PhD in Economics from MIT in 1990. His career has alternated between research, policy, and central banking: he worked at the IMF research department (1990-94), coordinated economic policy at the Chilean Ministry of Finance (1994-97), served as Minister of Economy, Mining, and Energy (2000-01), and as Vice-Governor and then Governor of the Central Bank of Chile (2003-2011). His academic research is in macroeconomics, monetary policy, capital flows, and Latin American economies, with over 100 articles published. He and Christopher have collaborated on an early paper on inflation pass-through and oil prices.
