About
Rodrigo Valdes is a Chilean economist who became Director of the Fiscal Affairs Department at the International Monetary Fund in October 2025, having previously led the IMF’s Western Hemisphere Department from 2023. He served as Chile’s Minister of Finance from 2015 to 2017 and held senior roles including Director of Research at the Central Bank of Chile, and he earned his PhD in economics from MIT. He is a coauthor with Christopher Neilson and Eduardo Engel on ‘Chile’s Fiscal Rule as Social Insurance.’
